Want to know more?

On Tuesday May 10th, the Art & Culture department of VU University is hosting another Master’s Day. On this day, prospective students can get a taste of course programmes such as Visual Arts, Media & Architecture, Design Cultures, Intermedialities in Media & Arts, etc. The day will consist of a series of sample classes taught by professors and lecturers. The aim is to introduce prospective students to the programmes by way of first-hand experience rather than descriptions. It will also give them a chance to wander through the halls of the department and catch a glimpse of what goes on there.

Autonomy Summer School

5 Apr

The second Autonomy Summer School will take place at DAI (Dutch Art Institute) in Arnhem from July 6 to 10. The Summer School is part of the Autonomy Project, a collaboration between universities, art schools and the Van Abbemuseum that seeks to stimulate reflection among students and young practitioners on the notion of autonomy. What could autonomy mean today – in art, academia, and elsewhere? In a number of practical and theoretical workshops, the Summer School will focus on ‘mediating autonomy’, that is to say on the use of media (including television, radio and the internet) for the creation of autonomy in both an artistic and a social or communal sense. VAMA and other VU MA students  who are interested in participating can contact Sven Lütticken for more information.

The Summer School will also serve as preparation for a public conference that will take place at the Van Abbemuseum in October. Speakers will include Jacques Rancière and Thomas Hirschhorn. In the fall, Sven Lütticken will offer a tutorial in conjunction with this conference.

Kunstschrift & Lucas van Leyden

5 Apr

At the beginning of March, the journal Kunstschrift published its first issue of 2011. The issue was dedicated to ‘collage’ and included texts by Paul van den Akker and Frits Scholten, both lecturers at VU University and editors of Kunstschrift.

Less than a month later, the second issue has already appeared. Entitled Lucas van Leyden. Een uitbundige poppenkast, it focuses on the work of the 16th century artist Lucas van Leyden (1494-1533). It appears on the occasion of the exhibition Lucas van Leyden en de Renaissance at the Museum de Lakenhal (Leiden), on show until June 26th.
